Thinking Ahead to Winter Maintenance? Better Start Early!

It’s only natural for Canadians to get suspicious about any “good” weather we receive in the fall.

Sure, we’ll enjoy the above 20°C we’ve been gifted this first week in October, but we all know what’s only a few short weeks away.

Winter. Snow. Ice.

What does this mean for your condominium? Get ahead, and plan what construction and maintenance repairs you can attend to during the cold months.

Have a wall that needs sprucing up? Much like how our skin reacts to the dry interior air, this is a great time to throw on a new coat of paint. It’ll dry faster and allow for your contractor to put on multiple layers in a shorter amount of time.

Small bathroom renovations

No one wants to be disrupted by a large renovation in the middle of the winter months. If you know of any repair or maintenance involving a unit owner’s bathroom, start with small areas, like a faucet. Not only will this help with your condominium’s water conservation, it’ll help cultivate a trusting relationship and open communication with the unit owner or renter.

Fire alarms and safety features

The peak months for house fires are December and January. Start your condominium’s winter season by checking and replacing any smoke and carbon monoxide alarms and checking for any obstructions or potential issues by any fire route and escapes.

Keep the communication between the board and the condominium management company clear and open. Take note from your previous inspection and see where you can start, and where you’ll need to come back to at the end of winter.

Work with your contractors and outline a conducive plan to bring your building to where it needs to be. If you have any concerns about your condominium’s winter maintenance plan, talk to your board today.
